About the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher stand 214 metres above the Atlantic at their highest point and run for almost fourteen kilometres along the coast of County Clare, inside the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark. O'Brien's Tower has been on the high ground since 1835, put there for the visitors who were already coming. How much does it cost to get into the Cliffs of Moher?

€15 for an adult at the gate, €12 for students and over-65s, and €30 for a family of two adults and two children. Children under 12 go free, up to four per adult. Booking online is cheaper than the gate rate, and most of the guided days here already carry the admission inside the fare.

Is admission included in the tour price?

On most of them, yes. Most fares here name the Cliffs of Moher entry inside the price; a couple exclude it in writing; a few say nothing either way; and the walks that climb the free coastal trail never enter the paid area at all. Every tour card says which of those applies, in those words.

How long do you get at the Cliffs of Moher on a tour?

Anywhere from fifteen minutes to four hours. That is a very wide gap between days that otherwise look alike. Two hours is a good coach day, ninety minutes is common, and the guided walk from Galway gives four. The attraction itself suggests allowing about two hours.

What are the opening hours?

The Cliffs of Moher Experience publishes 8am to 7pm daily. The hours move with the season — closer to 9am–5pm in midwinter and as late as 9pm at the height of summer — so check the official page before planning a late arrival. It closes on 24, 25 and 26 December.

Do I need to book ahead?

Not to get in, but booking online costs less than the gate rate and is sold in three arrival bands, so it saves money as well as queueing. If you are taking a guided day, the booking is already done for you on the fifteen fares that carry the ticket.

Is parking extra?

No. Parking is inside the admission price when you book online, which is worth knowing before you compare a self-drive day against a coach seat.

Is O'Brien's Tower included?

Yes. Entry to the O'Brien's Tower Experience and its tour is inside the admission price, so if your fare covers the gate it covers the tower as well. It was built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O'Brien and stands on the high point of the cliffs.

What time is quietest?

Before 11am or after 4pm. That is the attraction's own advice, and it lines up with its pricing: the 11am–4pm band is the one it charges peak rates for, and it is also when most coach tours arrive. A midday or afternoon departure from Galway puts you there after the morning wave.

How long should I allow?

About two hours, which is what the attraction recommends and what a well-judged coach day gives you. Under an hour is enough for the main viewing platforms and not much else; over three hours only makes sense if you are walking the trail.

Are the Cliffs of Moher wheelchair accessible?

The attraction is, and generously so: lifts to every floor, wheelchairs to borrow at reception, electric mobility buggies, and eleven accessible parking spaces across the two car parks. Getting there is the harder half. Almost every coach and minibus here states that it is not wheelchair accessible. The Dublin chauffeur day is the exception and says its vehicle is.

What happens if it is foggy?

There is no refund for weather, but the attraction lets a ticket be reused within twenty-four hours if fog spoils the view, and staff tell you the visibility when you arrive. On a guided day the equivalent protection is free cancellation up to twenty-four hours before departure, which almost every tour here carries.

How high are the Cliffs of Moher?

214 metres, or 702 feet, at the highest point — which is just north of O'Brien's Tower rather than at the tower itself. They are not Ireland's tallest sea cliffs, but they are the most dramatic stretch of coast the country has made easy to reach.

Can I see the cliffs from a boat?

Yes, and it is a genuinely different view: the cruise sails along the base of the wall from Doolin and shows you the scale from underneath. Nothing lands at the cliffs, so a boat day either adds a cliff-top stop as well or skips the top entirely. A couple of the days here do skip it, and their cards say so.

Is a Cliffs of Moher day trip from Dublin worth it?

It is a twelve to thirteen hour day and there is no train to the cliffs, so a coach is the practical answer if you are not driving. What makes it worth it is what else comes with the ticket: most Dublin days add Galway, the Burren, Ennis or Limerick to the same fare.

Can I bring a dog?

Yes, on a lead. Only service and guide dogs may go inside the visitor centre building. Several of the tours here also state that service animals are allowed on board.
